I first met Josh over 50 years ago as a freshman at Harvard
- our friendship got off to a good start when I agreed to take the upper bunk
in Harvard’s Straus D-32.
Regrettably we fell out of touch after
Harvard. When we were reunited I quickly discovered that, in many
ways, Josh was still Josh. As a freshman he was excited about the ring
dove project that had earned him a Westinghouse scholarship. Decades
later as a professor at City College, he was excited about his research.
And in touch with the people around him. Although conversations with Josh
were often about things, Josh always cared about and had insight into people -
be they students in his lab or friends. He had more friends than I have
acquaintances. Josh was quick to pick up on the irony or humor in a
situation, including ones involving himself. When we found ourselves
laughing at ourselves, it was often because of something Josh had pointed out.
I can only imagine the void when our group next convenes,
without Josh.
